Article for WATVA Magazine

The Forest County ATV Association (FCATVA) sponsored a ceremony on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 in

the County Board Room at the Forest County Courthouse to celebrate an OHV Access Grant award from

the Yamaha Motor Corporation in the amount of $8,000.00.  Approximately 35 people attended the

ceremony.  FCATVA Jack Matuszewski presided over the event.    Mr. Matuszewski explained that the

$8,000.00 is a matching grant to a $20,000.00 grant awarded by the U.S. Forest Service  through the

Resource Advisory Committee (RAC).  Al Krause, from Antigo Yamaha presented the grant to FCATVA

President Jack Matuszewski.  Mr. Krause noted that Antigo Yamaha had written a letter of support for

the grant and was pleased and excited to present the grant to the FCATVA.

Tom Tallier, Chairperson of the RAC Committee explained the cooperation, coordination, and

collaboration that exists among the U.S. Forest Service, Forest County, Oconto County and the ATV clubs

throughout the area to achieve the goals of the RAC Committee.   The Forest County Forestry

Committee provides leadership for the RAC committee consisting of 15 members from Forest and

Oconto Counties.  Members of the committee represent many different interests and talents.

Guest speaker Senator Jim Holperin stated that approximately 40% of the ribbon cutting ceremonies

that he attends are for new trails, trail additions, or new access.  He stated that trail development is very

important to small communities as the key to a successful economy and thanked everyone for their

efforts in trail development.

Representative Jeff Mursau thanked the volunteers from the FCATVA for their perseverance recognizing

ATV development is an uphill battle.  He stated that businesses also appreciate the work to

promote tourism.  Rep. Mursau stated that he is also a member of the RAC Committee.

Jeff Seefeldt, District Ranger, stated that partnering with the RAC Committee has given the Forest

Service the opportunity to work with a large number of people and the ATV clubs.  He stated that this

process helps to build relationships and improve communication among people with different

perspectives to help in the decision making process for future planning of the forest.

On behalf of the Forest County Board, County Board Chairman, Erhard Huettl, thanked the FCATVA

officers, Jack Matuszewski, President, John McCulloch, Vice-President, Jeannie Weyers, Secretary, and

Jim Hausinger, Treasurer, for their work in promoting ATV trails and routes stating that

routes and trails have been opened up in every township in Forest County with the exception of one

township.  Mr. Huettl stated these routes and trails are very important to hotels, restaurants

and businesses in the area that benefit from ATV ridership.  Mr. Huettl thanked Senator Holperin

and Representative Mursau for their support and assistance to Forest Co.  Mr. Huettl also

thanked the Forestry Department for their diligent work in improving trail development.

Ron Henkel, Town Chairman from Blackwell, announced that he was proud to present a check in the

amount of $500.00 from his township to FCATVA Jack Matuszewski as part of the matching grant to

work toward a coordinated trail system.  This grant will improve existing Forest Service classified and

unclassified roads for ATV travel from the Nicolet State Trail to Blackwell.

Speaker Randy Harden, President of the Wisconsin ATV Association (WATVA), stated that there are over

100 ATV Chapters across the State of Wisconsin and complimented the work that has been achieved by

the FCATVA.  Mr. Harden stated that the grant would be an excellent funding mechanism for ATV clubs

at the local level because that is where partnership and collaboration occurs.  He congratulated the

partners on their success.

Forest Administrator Dave Ziolkowski reiterated the success of obtaining these grants as the result of

the U.S. Forest Service, the RAC Committee, FCATVA, and Yamaha working together to achieve their

goals.  He stated that there have been two other celebrations that have been conducted in the past two

years for the dedication of the Wolf River State Trail and the Nicolet State Trail.  Dave stated that the

Forestry  Committee is the group that plans for future trails and  has successfully developed 54 miles of

State funded AV Trails in Forest County.

The coordination and cooperation of entities working together has added 300 miles of ATV routes

resulting in a positive impact to local tourism.

Dave thanked the legislators, WATVA, the RAC Committee and the FCATVA for working together to

attain their goals.  Dave outlined some ideas for the future that he shared with the audience.

In Jack Matuszewski’s closing remarks, he thanked the speakers and the audience for attending the

ceremony and Mary Torgerson for organizing the lunch and refreshments that were served.

December/2011

Recent Events

Our annual Banquet was held on Sept. 24th at T-Bob’s in Laona.  51 members attended and enjoyed a great meal, as usual, raffle prizes,
and some great fellowship with other members.
A good time was had by all.

Our club was proud to donate to Forest County Social Services so they could buy and hand out gifts to children who may not have gotten any for Christmas otherwise.

Upcoming Events

Not a lot happening during the winter months,
but there will be a presentation of the Yamaha grant check to be held at the Forest County Courthouse on Tuesday, December 20th.
Several dignitaries will be present as a representative from Yamaha presents the $8,000 check to our club.
For those of you who are not aware of this,
our club has been working for four years with the U.S. Forest Service and the Nicolet National Forest Eastside Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) on,
what we have formally referred as, the Blackwell Connection.
This will be a connection from the Nicolet State Trail to Blackwell, which, we certainly hope, will eventually lead to a connection all the way to Marinette County.
With the excellent capabilities of our grant writer, Diane Hausinger, and the assistance of Antigo Yamaha,
we were awarded this grant on our first try.  Another success story for FCATVA.

Trail/Route Update

The Forest Service needs to confirm this yet, but stated they thought Torpee Road into Wabeno will open up next spring.
An engineering study has been started on the corroder along State Highway 8 from Crandon to the Oneida County line.
The town of Nashville opened up Deep Hole Lake Road from the town of Lincoln to Sand Lake Road, and Sand Lake Road from Deep Hole Lake Road to Mole Lake.
Thus, you can now get to Mole Lake from the Wolf River trail, exiting at the Hemlock Lake crossing.
The town of Nashville also opened up Pickerel Lake Road from the Langlade County line (Town of Ainsworth) to Jerry Schuh’s bar just before County Highway DD.
These town of Nashville roads are opened on a one year trial basis, so, if you’re riding them, please obey all speed limits and other regulations.

Also, County Highway C east of Wabeno between Linse Road and Knowles Creek Road is open.

John Brantmeier is working with us to try to connect Ada Lake Road in Langlade County to Macarthur Trail in Forest County.
There is a short section by Windfall Lake that may have to utilize the shoulder of State Highway 52, which may be difficult to get, but John is seeing what he can do.

Highway W from Keith Siding Road north to Northview Rd. will be opening up next spring once we get it signed.
Also, the town of Lincoln may be opening up Keith Siding Road from Highway W to the Wolf River Trail and possibly all the way to Beachside ( formally Metonga Resort).
We will have more info next newsletter.

The trail leading into Crandon north of Hwy 8 has been moved so it no longer goes through the big mud hole, where some ATV’s actually got stuck.

The Nicolet State Trail in Oconto County is closed for the winter.
In Forest County the only trails open for both ATV’s & snowmobiles are the Nicolet State Trail and the Wolf River State Trail

The Wolf River State Trail is now open to the town of Lily in Langlade County.

The town of Lakewood will open all their town roads come spring.

2012 Maps

The 2012 map project is underway.  Letters have been sent to all the 2011 sponsors requesting them to again sponsor an ad on the 2012 maps.
Two of our three major sponsors have already replied that they will be on board.  Several of the smaller ad sponsors have also already replied.
We have also sent letters to prospective new sponsors.

If you know of any businesses that you feel may be interested in having an ad on our 2012 map,
please have them call 715-473-2219 or e-mail
lweyers@centurytel.net.  Thank you.

Maintenance

In October, our club graded and rolled the entire Nicolet State Trail in Forest County, as well as the Wolf River Trail in Forest County.
We also assisted in installing a gate on the west side of the School Forest Trail.
This gate will only be closed during spring break-up, when the trails are closed anyway.  Gravel was put down in November on the School Forest Trail,
so this project is finally completed.

Winterfest 2011

Over 100 children visited Santa at the Wabeno Town Hall, participated in Make “n Take craft projects, chose their favorite tattoo, while sipping hot chocolate and eating Christmas Cookies.

Lee Lamers provided Christmas carols while strumming his guitar.  Children also had their picture taken with Santa!

FCATVA members baked cookies and could be observed at each station whether it was at the Legion Hall selling sandwiches and refreshments, selling raffle tickets,
or helping with the chili cook-off contest while others were stationed at the Town Hall selling tickets for the horse drawn wagon ride,
conducted the make ‘n takes, applied tattoos, or served gallons of hot chocolate and dozens of cookies donated by FCATVA members.

As the President of the Wabeno Chamber of Commerce expressed, “ this event would not happen if it weren’t for the involvement and participation of FCATVA members.”

Several of our members participated in the Crandon fourth of July parade on July 2nd.
We were joined by Sam Wurtinger, the Forest County Rec Officer and one of his assistants.
The crowd was large and very receptive of our group.
It was a great event.  We also participated in the Wabeno Mammoth Days Parade on July 10th.
Again the streets were lined with well-wishers cheering us as we went by.
The kids always like the candy we toss to them.

Our annual Poker Run took place on Saturday, July 9th , at CJ’s Bar in Newald.
Randy Werth coordinated this event again this year, and again had a very successful day.

Several of our members also volunteered at the Wabeno Street Dance held on August 5th.
This always helps to get our organization’s name out there and shows our dedication to helping our area communities.

Upcoming Events

September 24th is our annual Banquet to be held at T-Bob’s in Laona.
If you can get or make any prizes for the raffle that will be held that night, they are always appreciated and needed.  Thank you.

Trail/Route Update

Nothing new  to report on Torpee Road into Wabeno or the corroder along State Highway 8 from Crandon to Monica.

In the June newsletter it stated that Highway G east of Cavour is now open to the Nicolet State Trail.  That should have been “west” of Cavour.

They also opened up the following roads coming off of Pickerel Lake Road that are dead-end roads:  Short Lane, Forest Lane, Page Lane, Crescent Lane, and Bartz Bay Road.
These town of Nashville roads are opened on a one year trial basis, so, if you’re riding them, please obey all speed limits and other regulations.

Also, two short sections of County Highway C east of Wabeno are now open.
The first is between Linse Road and Knowles Creek Road; the second is between Bay Shore Road and Mc Caslin Tower Road.

John Brantmeier is working with us to try to connect Ada Lake Road in Langlade County to Macarthur Trail in Forest County.
There is a short section by Windfall Lake that may have to utilize the shoulder of State Highway 52, which may be difficult to get, but John is seeing what he can do.

Help us out:  The grader drivers in at least two of our townships have noticed ATV footprints on the roads that they maintain.
These footprints are when ATV’s make a U-turn on a gravel road, swerve back & forth on the road, or worse yet, do cheerios on the road.
These footprints stick out like a sore thumb.  I know none of our members would do this, but if you do see someone performing these actions,
please let them know how this affects the decisions of a town board to open up gravel roads to ATV’s.
Sometimes this is the only impression a town board has of ATV’s and does not help in persuading that board to open up these roads.
If you do need to make a U-turn, do not turn real sharply and do not gun the machine.
Better yet would be to turn slightly, then back up, and finally finish the turn slowly.
I know this takes longer, but it does not leave that footprint for everyone to see, and in the long run will get us more gravel roads opened up.  Thank you.

Membership

As of September, 2011, our total membership is 361.  This includes 270 family members, 58 single members, and 33 business members.
A big welcome to all of our new members (since I didn’t get some names in the June newsletter, I am listing all new members since March):
Antigo Yamaha, Joe Baugnet, Beach Side Bar & Grill, Dick Biese, Jim & Deborah Brock, Crandon International Raceway, Mike & Jane Egan, Luke Ison, Johnnies Resort,

Please join us at any of our monthly meetings.  If you know someone who would like to become a member, please have them contact Donna Palmbach.

Maintenance

Our club had the contract to maintain 19.8 miles of the Nicolet State Trail from Laona to the northern Forest County line.
We now also have the remainder of the Nicolet State Trail to the Oconto County line, a total of 32 miles.
It has all been graded and brushed.  The bridges in Wabeno and Popple River have been repaired.
The trees in the School Forest Trail have been cut and positioned along the sides of that trail to keep riders on the trail.
A culvert has been put in to help the water issues.  Gravel still needs to be added.

We have applied for a $10,000 grant from Yamaha, which would be utilized for the creation of the Blackwell connector trail.
We will find out by the end of October if we are successful in getting that grant.  There is a Forest Service meeting on September 12th, where this connector will also be discussed.

Newsletter & Calendar of Events

MARCH/2011

Recent Events

Not a lot of activities going on through the winter months.  We still continue to meet on the 2nd Saturday of each month and I’ll touch on a few of those topics in other
areas of this newsletter.  We will be setting up a booth at the 2nd annual Laona Sport Show to be held on Friday, May 6th and Saturday, May 7th.
We can certainly use all the volunteers we can get to help man that booth during the show.  Hopefully we can get enough members so we only have to each be there a
couple of hours.  You can ride your ATV north or south on the Nicolet State trail to get to the Sport Show.  There will be a lot of exhibitors and plenty of good food and drink.
Come and enjoy.

Trail/Route Update

Reminder:  Trails are closed during spring thaw until May 1st.  Routes may or may not be open.  Check with the local townships or find out from someone in the
area before you ride.  Thank you.

The mapping committee signed up 73 sponsors for our 2011 Forest County ATV map.  Spectra Printing out of Stevens Point will be our printer and we approved
the latest proof as of March 17th.  Now it goes to print.  They are printing 10,000 maps for us, and we expect to have them before April 15th.  Glenn Dommer built
75 boxes to be used by our sponsors to display the maps and collect the $1.00 donation we are asking for each map.  We will also have a supply of maps at our
monthly meetings starting in May and also at our booth at the Laona Sport Show and any parades we ride in.  We strongly urge our members to support all of our
sponsors’ businesses and tell them “Thanks” for supporting us.

The Forest Service road from Torpee Road into Wabeno needs an analysis done so the procedure is started but may take 2-3 years.
The corroder along State Highway 8 from Crandon to Monica is still being worked on and looks hopeful.  Routes are being looked at in the northern area
of the county so riders can get in and out of the Alvin/Nelma areas.  We will put the signs up on the new route through the Town of Lincoln as soon as the
snow & frost is gone (yes, for our southern members, we still have snow up here).  Reminder:  If you frequent any of the Town of Nashville businesses,
you can help by letting them know your disappointment that you cannot get to their locations by ATV anywhere in the town of Nashville.

Membership

As of March, 2011, our total membership is 353.  This includes 268 family members, 56 single members, and 29 business members.  This keeps us the largest
ATV club in Wisconsin.  A big welcome to all of our new members:  Adam’s Mobile Marine & Mike Albrecht.  Please join us at any of our monthly meetings.
If you know someone who would like to become a member, please have them contact Donna Palmbach.

What has your membership in the Forest County ATV Club accomplished???

Only a few short years ago there was only 8 miles of trails/routes open in Forest County – the county trail just off of Highway W.  Now there are 2 state trails
and miles of trails and routes going almost all over throughout the county.  Every township in the county with the exception of Nashville has ATV routes.
We have connections into Oconto, Langlade, Marinette, & Florence counties.  We can connect with upper Michigan.  When you pick up the new 2011 Forest
County ATV Map, take a look at the red lines marking all the existing trails & routes.  We still have some isolated areas, of course, but we continually work on
connections so riders can get where they want to go.  We have individuals and businesses coming to us for help to figure out connections.  This is what your
membership does.  We also assist financially and with volunteers to several events throughout the county every year.  We teach the next generation of riders how
to ride safely.  These good will gestures give us pride in our club and promote our name throughout this area.  By riding safely and respectfully on the trails &
routes, we also display a good image to other riders and to pedestrians.  Stopping and helping   others in need or just shooting the breeze with them also promotes our name.

Be Proud to be a member of the Forest County ATV Association.  Your membership dues are going to good use.

                                                Maintenance

Our club has the contract to maintain 19.8 miles of the Nicolet State Trail from Laona to the northern Forest County line.  There is also the possibility that we could
get the maintenance for the Nicolet State Trail south from Laona to the Oconto County line.
The spring maintenance day is going to be Saturday, April 23rd, starting at 9:00 am.  We will meet in Newald.  We can use as many helpers as possible.
Bring rakes, shovels, chain saws, gloves, etc.

A big Thanks – in advance.

DEC/2010

Recent Events

Several of our members again volunteered to help at the Wabeno Winter fest held on December 11th.  Although the attendance was somewhat down due to Mother Nature
dropping approximately 12” of snow along with 20 to 30 mph winds, lots of hardy individuals still came out to visit with Santa, enjoy cookies, taste and vote on their favorite chili,
purchase hamburgers, brats, or hot dogs, drink coffee, hot chocolate, soda, or beer, try their luck on the raffles, listen to Christmas music, and enjoy the company of friends and
neighbors.  Thanks to all of our members that assisted with this event.

Trail/Route Update

It was decided at the November meeting that our club would do the footwork for our 2011 map.  This entails getting all the sponsors for the map as well as laying out
any new trails and/or routes.  A committee was formed, a printer was selected, forms were printed, and the county was divided in sections for members of the committee
to start contacting possible sponsors.  Thus, the process has begun.  Several sponsors have been signed up already.  If you know of any business or individual that you
feel might wish to have an ad on the back of the Forest County ATV map, let me know by calling me at 715-473-2219 or e-mailing me at
lweyers@centurytel.net.  Thank you.

The appeal process for the Blackwell connection ended Sept. 9th so that is still in the works.  The Forest Service road from Torpee Road into Wabeno needs an analysis
done so the procedure is started but may take 2-3 years.  The corroder along State Highway 8 from Crandon to Monica has been denied by the DOT, but this does not
mean it cannot happen. Sen. Holperin and Representative Mursau are participating in the necessary meetings and discussions that could result in this changing
sometime in the distant future.

The Wolf River Trail opened from Crandon south to the Langlade County line this past summer.  Good News:  A memorandum of understanding has been signed
with the town of Lincoln that will open up 19 miles of ATV routes in that township.  All of these routes will be open in the spring as soon as we can get all the signs up.
This will connect the Nicolet State Trail with the Wolf River Trail but you will have to go north on the Nicolet Trail to Newald, then west to Argonne, then south and west
through the town of Lincoln. It connects to the Wolf River Trail just east of Ground Hemlock Lake.  Bad News:  We were not successful in getting any of the
Town of Nashville roads open that would have connected these two trails on the southern side of the county.  If you frequent any of the Town of Nashville businesses,
you can help by letting them know your disappointment
that you cannot get there by ATV.

Membership

As of December, 2010, our total membership is 363.  This includes 139 family, 56 single and 29 business members.  This keeps us the largest ATV club in Wisconsin.
A big welcome to all of our new members: Steve & Cathy Braunreiter, Crandon Café, Wayne & Renee Daul, Chuck Enders, Amy Fronti, Greg Hullar, Joseph Langyel,
Marty, Ann Marie, & Brittany McPherson, Gregg Sheldon, Richard, Aron, & Mason Sprague, and Leon Stenz.  Please join us at any of monthly meetings.

                                                Maintenance

Our club has the contract to maintain 19.8 miles of the Nicolet State Trail from Laona to the Florence county line.  Occasionally we may also maintain this trail from
Laona south to the Oconto County line.  No maintenance will be scheduled until next spring

Raffle

The drawing for the Honda 420cc, fuel injected, power steering, automatic, & independent suspension ATV was held on November 27th at T-Bob’s in Laona.
The winner of the ATV is Mike Gostisha of Appleton.  Congratulations Mike.  The winner of the 2nd place prize, a Potawatomi Carter Casino weekend getaway,
was Larry Talkowski from upper Michigan.  The 3rd place prize, a hand held GPS unit, was won by Eric Windorff from DePere.  The 4th place prize, a decoratively
painted saw was won by Jeanie Peters of Long Lake.  Congratulations to all the winners and a huge thank you to everyone who purchased and sold raffle tickets.
This helps us to get more trails/routes open, to maintain these trails, as well as promote safety through ATV training.  It also enables us to assist needy organizations
and individuals in our county, which promotes our club as well.

Several of our members participated in Fourth of July parades in both Laona and Wabeno.  All ATV’s were decorated with flags, but the highlight for the spectators
was the large rabbit, dressed as an ATVer, riding on a miniature Harley Davidson 3-wheeler.  All the kids gladly scooped up the candy we threw their way as well.
Thank you to all riders that participated.

On August 7th, members of our club helped out at the Wabeno Street dance, working in the food/drink stands and selling tickets for our ATV raffle.  Thank you volunteers.

August 18th saw several of our members volunteering for the annual Forest County Senior Pontoon Ride.  125 seniors participated from all around the county including
several from Nu Roc, Potowatomi, & Crandon Nursing Home.  Even with a cool wind blowing in off the lake, the majority of seniors went for a ride on one of the 11 pontoons
supplied by volunteers.  After the ride the seniors ate heartily and then played bingo.  A great time was had by all.  Thank you volunteers who helped make this day special.
Our club also contributed financially to this event.

August 28th was the grand opening of the Wolf River Trail in Forest County.  Jack cut the ribbon on the trail in Crandon and speeches were made by Senator Jim Holperin,
Representative Jeff Mursau, County Chairman Erhart Huettl, and County Forester Dave Ziolkowski.  That evening we were the lead story on Channel 12 news out of Rhinelander.
Afterwards a cookout luncheon consisting of brats, hamburgers, hot dogs, and the fixings was supplied by our club.  Thanks again to all who helped to make this another
rewarding event.

Our annual ATV banquet was held on September 11th at T-Bobs in Laona.  Jack congratulated our officers and several hard-working members amongst the 80 in attendance.
He also announced that we are now the LARGEST ATV club in Wisconsin.  Thank you all members.  The food was great as usual and then the raffle was held.   For some it was a
lucky night as their numbers were called, especially one couple celebrating their anniversary.  They had their arms full when they left.  Congratulations.  Another great event.
Special thanks to those who organized this event.

Trail/Route Update

The new Forest County ATV maps did finally get published and are available throughout the county or from several of our members.

The appeal process for the Blackwell connection ended Sept. 9th so that is still in the works.  The Forest Service road from Torpee Road into Wabeno needs an analysis done so the
procedure is started but may take 2-3 years.  The corroder along State Highway 8 from Crandon to Monica has to involve the DOT, who would have to sign it over to the DNR.
We are looking to Sen. Holperin and Representative Mursau for help with this.

As stated above the Wolf River Trail is now open from Crandon south to the Langlade County line.  A couple of connecting routes are being discussed with the towns of Nashville
and Lincoln.
If successful, there would be routes between the Nicolet State Trail and the Wolf River Trail.  Wish us luck.

Some people have received questionnaires regarding the pilot UTV program.  If you have received one, we strongly encourage you to respond to it.  Some trails may not be
open to UTV’s next year due to the trail being too narrow.  There will probably be a maximum width size limit that will determine if an UTV will be allowed onto any trails.
We’ll keep you informed but your input is very important.

                                                           Membership

                                                                                                                        Maintenance

Our club has the contract to maintain 19.8 miles of the Nicolet State Trail from Laona to the Florance County line.  Occasionally we may also maintain this trail from Laona
south to the Oconto County line.  A work day is being planned for the end of October.  If you would like to help, contact Randy Werth.

State Representative  Jeff Mursau was in attendance and stated that he is proud to be a member of the club, and that he has worked for advancement of ATV routes and trails in the area
to enhance the economic well being of the area and to promote the use of ATV’s for recreational use.

Jack also thanked the officers of the club for their diligence in working  for the benefit of the club, including John McCulloch, Vice-President, Jim Hausinger, Treasurer, Jeannie Weyers,
Secretary.  Others who were recognized were:   Donna Palmbach, Membership Chairperson,  Lyle Weyers, Newsletter Chairperson,  Jeff Kramer, Webmaster, and

of the Wolf River State Trail, and the opening of all roads
in the Town of Freedom to ATV/UTV’s.

A delicious meal was served followed by a raffle.  The FCATVA wishes to thank all of those businesses in Forest Co. who contributed in any way to support the FCATVA
as well as providing raffle prizes for the annual dinner
.

June/2010

Recent Events

May 1st was the dedication of the opening of the Nicolet State Trail from Laona to Highway G.  You can now take the trail right up into Northern Michigan.
After the ribbon cutting, 80 plus riders took part in a rideending up in Laona, where there was a sport show being held that weekend.
Several vendors were displaying their stuff, including our FCATV booth.
Afterwards a luncheon was provided by the club at T-Bobs which included chicken, tenderloin tips, potatoes, gravy, and corn.  Excellent food.
Senator Jim Holperin and Representative Jeff Mursau spoke briefly as well as County Chairman Erhart Huettl and County Forester Dave Ziolkowski.
It was very windy day but a very great day with another section of trail opened.

Forest County joined the pilot program for UTV’s this year, so they are allowed on any open trails routes in the county.
Please check with other counties before riding your UTV out of Forest County.

Our club held a DNR/ATV safety training class on Saturday and Sunday, May 15th & 16th.  21 students attended and all of them passed
and received their certificate allowing them to drive ATV’s on open trails and routes.
Congratulations to these new ATVers and thanks to the instructors, Jim & Diane Hausinger and Lyle & Jeannie Weyers for their time.

Trail/Route Update

We are experiencing some difficulty with the publisher of the new Forest County ATV maps, but they are now expected out by July 1st.

The Blackwell connection is still in progress.  The Bushhafer connection is open.

The Freedom Town Board voted to open up all of their town roads to ATV/UTV’s as soon as they were signed.
John McCulloch, Jim Hausinger, and Lyle Weyers put up the signs Friday, May 4th so those roads are now open.
Reminder – county and state roads are NOT town roads and are only open if they are signed as being open.

The Forest County section of the Wolf River Trail is being worked on.
They started at the south end (Langlade County) and are working their way north.
The gravelling and grading is almost completed.  The installation of one bridge is needed but that could be completed in a few weeks,
so we’re hopeful the trail will be open by the end of July or maybe sooner.  None of this trail is open to ATV/UTV’s until it is completed.

Membership

As of June, 2010, our total membership is 322.  This includes 119 family, 50 single, and 34 business members.

Nice job, guys.  A big welcome to our new members:
Tom Baehnman, John & Sue Cleereman, Richard M. Connor, Mike & Debby Geboy,
Don & Penny LeMaster, Larry & Shelly Petrick, & Mike Prust.

                                                Maintenance

The wiring for the lights on the grader is complete.  Thank you Laona Machine.

Trail maintenance was done after the May 8th meeting and again on June 5th.
Bridges were repaired so the gravel could no longer fall down into the water below, leaving holes in the trail, brush was cleared, and the trail was graded.
Thank you to everyone for a job well done.  At the county forestry meeting held June 14th, our club was also given the contract to maintain the
Nicolet State Trailfrom Highway G to Laona.  Thus now we have 19.8 miles of trail to maintain but also will have more revenue coming in.

PONTOON BOAT RIDE AND PICNIC FOR THE SENIORS
AND DISABLED OF FOREST COUNTY WILL BE HELD  AT
THE LAKE METONGA PUBLIC BEACH ON WED., AUGUST 12, 2009

This is the 6th annual Pontoon Boar Ride and Picnic to be held.   Last year, a bountiful meal was served along with pontoon boat rides
for anyone who wanted to enjoy cruising on beautiful Lake Metonga.  People in attendance enjoyed the event while listening to live music provided by local musician Roger Geldon.
Volunteers brought delectable dishes to share and many businesses in the area donated food.  Bingo was played with businesses and volunteers furnishing the door and
bingo prizes.  Seven drivers donated their services as well as their pontoon boats to provide the activity that was “the highlight of the day” for many who proclaimed it was their first ride
 ever ever!

Last year, the annual event was sponsored by staff and volunteers of the Commission on Aging (COA) and the Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC).  Volunteers
included people from the community at large as well with the Forest Co. ATV Association (FCATVA) supplying a majority of the labor force!  It is anticipated there will be more people
in attendance this year to enjoy the festivities.  As a result, many additional clubs and organizations in the area are planning to support the event that will take place on August 12th.

If anyone wishes to volunteer for this event, please e-mail Diane Hausinger at jdhausinger@ez-net.com or call her at 715-473-2222.  Thank you for your interest!

Immediately after the June 14th monthly meeting, 29 ATV’s and 35 members, and 1 canine took to the trails starting from Newald. Randy Werth led the pack with a stop at
Chipmunk Falls to stretch the legs and taste the water from the Artesian well.  Even though the trails were not real dusty due to the recent rains, the clean clear water was very
refreshing.  The next step was at the Tipler Bar & Grill where we were treated to a lunch of hamburgers, brats, pork, hot dogs, potato salad, and some delicious brownies for dessert.
THANKS – Tipler Bar & Grill!!

From Tipler we again viewed the great scenery along the trail, including several good looking trout streams.
The last step was at Popple where the unique decorations and signs were enjoyed by all – including one in the men’s bathroom that several women seemed to enjoy the most.
(Don’t ask why they were in the men’s bathroom).

From Popple it was back to Newald for the reloading and back home.  Our thanks to Randy Werth and John McCulloch for organizing a great ride.

The weather cooperated with only a few sprinkles and a good time was had by all.

We look forward to next month’s ride after the meeting on July 12th in Cavour.
